The "Last Ever" Millie & Billy Ball
June 21st at the Buffalo Dance Hall
Saturday, June 21st MRAC hosted the "Last Ever" Millie & Billy Ball at the Buffalo Dance Hall. The event was in memory of Gary Rickman, a long time supporter of MRAC.
Kip Calahan and her Just Add Water Band, winner of the 2005 Best Western Album of the year award, provide the music. They also provided two-step, western swing and other country dance lessons.
The Millie and Billy Ball, Silver City's annual celebratory nod to two of Grant County’s most famous — and infamous — residents. The Millie and Billy Ball is partly a costume party, partly a charity raffle and partly a chance to show off your Western wardrobe. Costumes where not required, but there where prizes for the best dressed, and even a dusty cowboy hat was enough for you to join in on the Old West fun. Past Millie and Billy costumes had ranged from the historically accurate to the dramatically revealing.
Every one liked to be in high spirits and enjoying themselves. Thanks to the Art Council for a grand old time.
Gallery 400 featuring "What Color is the Wind" by George Mendoza
June 21st & 22nd at Galery 400
Gallery 400 held a private opening and dinner on Friday, June 20th and a public opening on Saturday, June 21st for artist George Mendoza.
Mendoza, who was recently nominated for the New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in the Arts, was diagnosed at age 15 with an incurable eye disease, fundis flavimaculatus. As a result, he lost his central vision and was left with a gray, foggy fringe of peripheral vision. In the center of his view, he sees what he calls "kaleidoscope eyes," intense and changing visual images of fiery suns, bright burning eyes and colorful pinwheels.
In 1993, he began to paint full time.
"Many years ago, I was getting tired of the eye problems," George said. "The dancing colors would not leave me alone. I spoke to a priest at a Holy Cross Retreat. 'Paint them,' he said, 'make designs, pictures from them."
Because George remembers physical sight, his works derive from visual memories intertwined with dreams, visions and emotional experiences. He paints figuratively and abstractly.
He became a world class runner, Olympic contender, author, and a motivational speaker to youths and the disabled in America.
The private dinner was a success and donations from the proceeds went to the Silver City Film Festival, which will be held in October. George's show "What Color is the Wind," can be viewed at Gallery 400 Monday-Friday 4pm to 6pm, by appointment at 313-7015 or if you are in the area during non gallery hours ring the door bell and someone will let you in the view the show.
